The story of the Avro Vulcan is as dramatic as the presence of the aircraft itself. Designed by a team led by Roy Chadwick, the man responsible for the Lancaster, the Vulcan was one of three bombers developed to carry Britain's airborne nuclear deterrent in the 1950s and 1960s. But it was Avro's delta-winged colossus rather than the Handley Page Victor or Vickers Valiant that became the backbone of the V-Force - and it wasn't until 1969 that the deterrent role passed from the banned bomber to the Polaris submarine.
