A gratitude journal sounds simple; taking a moment to catalogue what you are grateful for each day. The project begins slowly, but eventually, it becomes something you just have to do, like it did for author, Scott Koyler. Scott Koyler is a self-employed mason, doing stonework, repairs, and restorations. Koyler has lived in the Doylestown area since he was 10 years old. When Koyler was struggling with depression, his friends suggested he keep a gratitude journal. This practice was transformative for him. Instead of writing about daily problems and complaints in a journal, an inventory of positive thoughts can be created. Koyler was able to work through his anger and sadness and shift his perspective away from fear and into a place of thankfulness. Koyler was very devoted and has been doing this practice every evening before he goes to sleep. He noticed a change, a shift in his thinking. During the day, his thoughts were in a more thankful state of mind. A gratitude journal can cause glimpses of joy to permeate into each day and allow the mind to pick up on the small things that are often overlooked.
